European Spallation Source now using Kommers
The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a multi-disciplinary research facility based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS is one of the largest science infrastructure projects being built in Europe today. The facility's unique capabilities will benefit a broad range of research, from life science to engineering materials, from heritage conservation to magnetism. In the autumn of 2016, ESS launched a procurement procedure for an electronic tendering system. ESS awarded the contract to Primona for Kommers eNterprise, which is in use since October 2017.
ESS is organised as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) with member countries across Europe. This means that the organisation carries out public procurements, however following its own adopted procurement rules, which implies special requirements for configurability. With Kommers eNterprise, ESS makes its own settings of e.g. procurement processes, time plan templates and threshold values. Furthermore, ESS uses customer-specific references e.g. a prior information notice is called "Specific Advance Notice (SAN)". Solutions for transparency and openness are very important. Since the research facility requires very specialized products and services, some of them only available from international niche-companies, Primona took the opportunity to review the English language in Kommers and in general improve it for international usage. Ragnar Lindholm, head of marketing at Primona, explains:
- We are very proud to have ESS as customer and that we successfully delivered the requested solution. The delivery project was a good opportunity to tune Kommers for international use.
ESS is under construction in the city of Lund, in southern Sweden, next to the world-leading synchrotron light source, MAX IV. Every year 2 000 to 3 000 guest researchers from universities, institutes and industry will make use of ESS' wide range of scientific instruments, to carry out unprecedented research.
